Highlights: Visiting the Nimbus Fish Hatchery is free and gets you into the visitor nature center, fish pond area, and trail along the river. In the nature center, kids and adults learn about the salmon life cycle and can view the worker area where salmon eggs are collected and fertilized. In the fish pond area get up close to thousands of trout and salmon fish of various ages waiting to be planted in local waterways. Just outside the fish pond area is a short trail that runs along the American River and is paved with dirt and easy to push a stroller along.
Restrooms: Located inside the visitor center.
Food: None available, but there are a few picnic tables in front of the visitor center.
Tips: Bring nickels. You can get fish food for just a nickel from the food dispensers. Walk almost to the end of the trail and you’ll find a spot to go down to the river’s edge. Check the website and Facebook page for classes. The staff often has free nature classes throughout the year, including for toddlers. Fall is the best time to visit for the salmon spawning season when you may see the salmon run up the ladder to the hatchery’s holding ponds.
